Impressions of the Committee on Outcomes-based Healthcare Systems

The first plenary session of the European Health Parliament (EHP) on 28 October 2017 offered the participants an excellent opportunity to meet their committee colleagues and identify the scope of the project’s activities. The day started at the Google’s headquarters in Brussels, followed by an afternoon session at the European Parliament. The programme included a synthesis of what constitutes the EHP project: a cohesive group of professionals and students, together with renowned organizations toward a shared objective: advancing and shaping the future of healthcare in the EU.

Over fifty EHP participants were greeted, receiving a warm welcome from the organising partners, followed by a brief presentation explaining the project and a tour de table of the key supporters of this year’s programme. Members of EHP were assigned to five different committees, each one in charge of developing policy recommendations on a specific theme. This year’s themes are Outcomes-based Healthcare Systems, Robotics & Precision Medicine, Antimicrobial Resistance, Health Workforce Planning and the European Vaccine Initiative.

As members of the Outcomes-based Healthcare Systems Committee, we used the opportunity to learn each other’s backgrounds, experiences and engagement in the health policy environment. After an election of our Chair and Co-Chair, we commenced a group discussion which allowed us to get a grasp on how to work together over the next coming months.

The second part of the day took place at the European Parliament where members of the EHP had the chance to raise their questions to policy-makers and other stakeholders with rich experience in the field of EU healthcare. MEPs Brando Benifei, Karin Kadenbach, Alojz Peterle, Tibor Szanyi and Lieve Wierinck shared with the participants their first-hand experience with policy-making and discussed the prospects of healthcare at both the European level and beyond. Last but not least, Ms. Eleni Antoniadou, the President of the 2nd EHP edition, delivered a farewell speech tailoring welcome words while motivating new members to enjoy and take advantage of this excellent initiative.

Our Committee took home messages from the first plenary and is more than ready to working together towards #Making Health Great Again!
